Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

a mixed marriage Unfortunately, this Lott-induced conservative group therapy session we're all having has touched on the topic. Andrew Sullivan was one of the earliest to come out against Lott. And since he supports gay marriage, the whole gay marriage vs. interracial marriage element came in to the debate. Sigh.
Looking at a Monday date for seeing TTT. Argh! But I'm taking my 10 year old this time. Just not the same to have to see it on video, and I would like him to have the opportunity to be blown away by a great movie in the theatres like I was by Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark at his age.

That smile is devastating, isn't it?
Did I say that out loud?!
The "Shall I get you a box" line was something else. I held my breath and actually whooshed a sigh of relief when Gimli laughed. It really does bring out how their friendship is developing, doesn't it?
Just like when good friends can call each other names and no one gets offended. :)

'Cause I like the elves. After what they did to poor Smeagol?

... I swear I could see Ian holding on to a saddlehorn under his robes. It was really quick, but since I was concentrating on seeing how he rode Shadowfax at liberty, I caught it. Did anyone else see that?
I Didn't see a saddlehorn, I saw a cheater cord- white- and stirrups- ugh! I know it was the horse trainer standin that really did the riding scenes, and I could easily see that when Ian had to be on the horse there was something he could hold, like I said, I did see a white cord and stirrups- however, I cannot imagine that they would use a "horned" saddle since it was not supposed to show at all. I would think that there was a jockey saddle, training pad or circingle to provide the stirrups??

*Bash!* Where's the icon I earned, huh? :)

You do realize that you are watching a movie, don't you? LOL!

That IS weird. How could somebody this inept have kept hold of power for so long? Is it merely that he had incumbency and seniority on his side?
I find it hard to believe that the other Republican senators didn't know that Lott could be this idiotic. If that's the case, then what does it say about the Pubbies that they allowed Lott to stay in power for so long?

I wouldn't say Rose was "revolted" by his appearance on BET so much as she was amazed Mrs. W picked up right away that nothing better illustrated TL's cluelessness about blacks then his bright idea that the way to placate them was to go on BET and chat up AA and how white Southerners are still getting over their racism. How can he be so clueless yet represent a state that's 30% black? It was just as patronizing as if he'd come out and said he'd invited Al and Maxine over for fried chicken and watermelon to make up for the misunderstanding.

What? You don't like mushy face? hehehehehehee
You know, I tihnk they had to put on an in-your-face display of the depth of love Arwen and Aragorn share or the audience would be screaming for Aragorn to hook up with Eowyn.

I wish Eowyn would kick Arwen's big butt all the way to Valinor.

Hi.
Nice to meet you.
I looked up the femdwarf reference as per a polite suggestion (HoTD) and am satisfied that PJ got it right. I retain my opinion that his antics were beneath him and you are quite wrong in your assumption that I never liked Gimli to begin with.
Now, I may have read a little prickliness into your post that you did not intend, so I'll refrain from making similar assumptions in return.
To: LinnieBeth
Watch carefully when they are riding uphill towards the Hall. It's really quick. I got the impression that Ian was losing his balance and just grasped it gently to straighten himself, but the outline remains on the robe when his hand moves away.

Oops, do I need to resign my spot here now?

You do realize that you are watching a movie, don't you? LOL! huuh? What? What are you trying to say? Are you trying to insinuate that this didn't really happen or something?
heheheheh

No, not at all...

Greetings, in order to whole-heartedly agree with you about PJ's treatment of Faramir. I'm not sure that part can grow on me. I loved Tolkein's work-up of Faramir as the mirror image of Boromir. Looking alike but opposite in those good/bad traits of character which caused Boromir's downfall and Faramir to show his true greatness. IMHO, that was something very important to me in the reading and I missed that in the film.

I've forgotten, is Gimli older than 80 year old Aragorn?I did a quick look through the Tale of Years, and it didn't have an entry for Gimli's birth... but! I stumbled across the Dwarf genealogy at the end of Appendix A, and it gives the year of Gimli's birth as 2879... which makes him 11 years older than Bilbo, and ~52 years older than Aragorn.
