Hundreds of sailors bustled through the enormous hangar bay of this aircraft carrier this morning, making last-minute preparations as the ship sailed from Norfolk into a possible war...
Relatives who braved the atrocious conditions waved farewell at the gate of Pier 14, drenched and sometimes emotional as the ship pulled out.
Then the captain's voice came over the loudspeaker:
"Peace on earth to men of goodwill. All other, stand by."
