It is very serious, no doubt. All the more reason to avoid hype. I’ve read up on this recently. I dont like the reference that “nobody knows” what happens if they collide, which leads the reader to think there could be some super big mega mega cyclone. Apparently it has happened and we do know what occurs: think of two giant buzz saws colliding. What happens? Do they become one giant buzz saw? no; they tear each other apart. Just like the colliding buzz saws create a huge amount of shrapnel, the two storms still have a vast amount of moisture that has to go somewhere, but the result of the collision is weakening, not strengthening
Also the reference to a cyclone potentially making landfall in California. First, there are no tracks predicting that right now. Second, since 1854 there’s only one documented instance of a cyclone making a direct hit on California. This is because the Pacific Current comes out of Alaska and runs down the coast. That’s why San Francisco is so cold in the summer and offshore fog is common off the coast through the summer, and in many areas migrates inland at night. The water is too cold to support a hurricane; they rapidly fall apart. Still, per this article, just over 100 times in that 170 years disintegrating cyclones, that is, tropical storms, have come ashore and had major impacts. My point is just that it’s a bit irresponsible to mention a landfall potential without providing any further context
