Could it be that he was trying to cross the picket line to scab and they surrounded him? Fearing danger, he tried to drive out of the mob. So, instead of “accelerating into the crowd”, he was accelerating out of the crowd.

Seems suspicious that only two people were lightly injured. I mean, if you deliberately plowed into a crowd, how could you not seriously injure somebody?
