I do recall in the late 70s/early 80s there was some thinking in the foreign policy world we could use China as a leverage against the ruskies.

That didn't turn out so well as we've seen.

I too remember that very well. I’m not sure the reasoning for “China will stick with us” was a thing, but back then it was.
