In a number of ultraviolent movies I’ve watched recently, a wine bottle hit and smashed on the head of the bad guy didn’t do more than shake him up a little.

I would think that hitting someone over the head with a wine bottle with any significant velocity would almost certainly be fatal, or cause life-changing brain injury.

Hitting someone hard enough to break the bottle would probably also cause a broken skull. At least with any wine bottle I've ever picked up.
