Please be sure that you understand that this is due to advancement in computer technology, not NASA inability in the 1960s. The lunar lander WAS a rocket that landed tail first following a controlled descent.
The Saturn V was the first rocket that flew autonomously, and it was the first time that a computer existed in flight hardware.
