Local governments, environmental groups and residents have consistently pushed back, often citing safety concerns about major spills.

And every last one of them should be BANNED FROM PURCHASING ALL PETROLEUM PRODUCTS FOR LIFE

Instead of the pushback, Santa barbara luddites could work with sable to minimize any spill. Reinforce the pipeline, instantaneous pressure monitoring, etc. The Santa Barbara channel has lots of natural seepage of oil, already before Sable. And get a decent fee from sable. They could use the money to build a few spillover water reservoirs close to lake Cachuma to become more drought proof. And they can humanely solve their homeless problem to be a model for other cities. Instead they fold their arms, stamp their feet, stop any solution, then go and rave about the latest wine, coffee bar, or charity ball.
Maybe a bit of exaggeration, but they just don’t try and solve their problems if they think it interferes with their societal notions, and lifestyles. IMHO
