A misrepresented caution from the Bible. Self-defense isn't 'living by the sword'. Also the way you have interpreted that would doom LE and military folks. Responsibly defending your people is a virtue, legal ramifications may make it costly unless you live in the right place. TN sounds good.

CHILDREN in rural areas grow up understanding the discretion and responsibility of owning and handling guns. If a kid doesn’t own a gun, and know how to use it properly by age 12, he’s a wuss.

My understanding of that phrase from Matthew is that when choosing violence to get something you want , you yourself will have a violent end, whichwould apply to the attacker, not the defender.
IOW, I’m in church worshipping and a criminal comes in shooting up the place, so I shoot back protecting others….it is the criminal who dies “ by the sword”,
