I have too many memories of the Pat O'Brien's New Orleans patio bar to tolerate the blue stuff now, though it is totally a visual thing. My orange liqueur preferences these days run toward Combier or Giffard - if you haven't tried them, they are both serious distillers worth considering.
Another one that rates a spot on my bar shelf is "Clement Creole Shrubb" - a rhum agricole based curaçao with more prominent spice added. It seems to go better in Tiki drinks than the neutral spirit-based triple sec or the brandy-based Curaçao.
Oh, Mr M, I have a cherished memory of Pat O'Briens. My first time there, I had to try the obligatory Hurricane. I had one with my best buddy, finished it, and thought "This thing is too weak. What a touristy rip off!" I got up to go get a different drink and it was as if someone punched me in the jaw! Three of those wiped us out and it was the first time I ever saw my buddy get utterly blasted drunk.
