So I go to McDonalds maybe twice a year, if at all. Went today and placed my order at the self kiosk and when paying, there it was, the ole message of "would you like to round up?" If course, no! How long has Mickey D's been doing this and what cause is this money going to? For me, I don't round up because I can guarantee you there's no accountability for it. And, they get to write this "round up" money off their taxes
Ace Hardware does this same round up crap.
How come they don't round down?
You are quoting the them to Superman 3. And “Office Space.”
Not to be a grinch but many charities are fraudulent. Check out how much the upper “employees” get paid and benefits.
“McDonald’s primary charity organization is none other than the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which can easily be donated to while wrapping up a purchase, or even by donating cash or change directly to a donation box.
The McDonald’s Community page notes, “Every time you visit McDonald’s, you can support RMHC by choosing to Round-Up for RMHC when you place your order on the kiosk or ask the crew to Round-Up your order to the nearest dollar. You may also drop spare change in any of the RMHC Donation Boxes in restaurants or drive-thru.”
The RMHC has multiple programs that provide lodging for families in need of medical care that requires travel, they also provide spaces in hospitals for caretakers to rest, and have a mobile bus program that brings dental and medical care to communities.”
“The Round-Up program began in Kentucky in 2021 and has increased exponentially each year, showcasing the generosity of McDonald’s customers and the hard work of McDonald’s employees. Every dollar raised through Round-Up in Central Kentucky directly supports RMHC of the Bluegrass. In 2024, Round-Up raised over $770,000 to support families finding comfort, care, and a Home away from home in Lexington, providing over 6,100 nights of comfort.”

To answer your question, yes, I round up at McDonalds. I actually trust them to get the money to the charity they have been involved with for over 50 years. And the charity has an “Great” rating from Charity Navigator:

Charity Watch gives it an “A”.

“Maybe mcDonalds takes our round up pennies and sends them to Antifa, or other organized fraud charities?”
Nope. It goes where they say it goes. People, a corporation like McDonald’s DOES get reviewed. They don’t just line their own pockets. If you want to check, I posted 2 links to places that rate charities. Maybe folks could do some homework - it took me 2 minutes - before attacking.
Some of our grocery store clerks as of we want to donate the change (we pay cash) to some charity. It’s usually “for the children”. We just say we donate everything their our church — which is true if you don’t count the no-kill animal shelters. Our church doesn’t have a line item for pets that in the Budget.
On occasion given a specific charity, but mostly no.
I do not round up.
I do not round down.
I round sideways..... $1.59 becomes $1.00 and 8 shillings.
When a store asks me if I want to donate to the needy I tell the no I’m one of them they don’t know how to respond.
McDonald’s rounding-up money goes to Ronald McDonald House. That’s actually a worthwhile charity.
McDonald’s is the only place where I ever agree to the rounding up business. Even then, they don’t get much from us, because we only go there a few times a year.
It’s round up to give the money to some charity. Ronald McDonald house at McD’s. I don’t. But not against it.
Recently a young, woke clerk asked me if I wanted to round up.
It was for some usual, nebulous, feel good concept. I figure it’s free money for the grifting entities that have a better scam going than the cardboard sign people.
When I declined, she copped a judgy condescending attitude, saying that it was only ten cents.
Well in that case, they won’t miss it...
I don’t disagree.
In my specific example the pet store is locally owned (it’s an old “feed” store thats been in the area for more than 100 years) and the animal shelter has been operating almost as long.
I don’t usually give to “cure breast cancer” or “for the homeless” at the large stores.
We simply need to be discerning.
