I had clients who were half siblings. They couldn’t understand why their children were low IQ, had physical disabilities and a couple died. Oh, but they loooved each other, sigh.
I read a lot of novels from the 1800’s. Seems like marrying your first cousin was a thing. Of course, they’re novels, and I doubt if science was a part of their research.

There is a list in the bible that tells who one should not marry. I don’t think that it lists first cousins.
You’re not unique. There’s a lot of shock and horror on the topic in this thread. But go back 4, 5, 6, 7, 8+ generations, and I can pretty much guarantee that *everyone* on this thread has cousin-marriage in the woodpile. People were engaged in farming and were stuck living in rural areas in small villages, and options for marital partners were limited.
With that said, we’re living in a different world with easy mobility and access to a huge pool of potential partners. As such, there’s really no excuse for sticking in the shallow end of the gene pool.
Considering the history of the “British crown”, of COURSE they’d say marrying your first cousin is okay.
