Trying to view free republic on iPhone 17 iOS 26
Self

Posted on 09/21/2025 8:07:38 PM PDT by cableguymn

I realize this probably isn’t rocket science but I was talked in to an iPhone from android On my droid the text was reformatted to fit my screen On this iPhone it’s so tiny I can’t read it If I zoom I have to swipe from side to side to read a line of text. I am probably doing something wrong Turing the phone sideways to get landscape mode doesn’t seem to work. I have tried chrome safari and opera. Same results

Also confirmed by my kid I can’t change app notification sounds They are grouped and you can’t chance that. I like a loud sound when my security camera alerts but on this phone the same sound is used for that and notices from unimportant apps. Am I doing something wrong? All the info I find on the web is for older iOS versions and the place they say I can set a sound isn’t there

iOS 26 right now is garbage. It's really buggy and full of issues. Totally undercooked. I downloaded it a few days ago for my iPhone 16 and hated it from the get-go.

I downgraded back to iOS 18.

Supposedly 26.1 is coming out soon to address many of the issues. iOS 26 is getting A LOT of complaints on the Apple forums. They really dropped the ball on this.

This phone is brand new. I don’t think there is a way to downgrade

In the default Safari browser:

On the far left of the address bar at the top is an icon which looks like a box with 2 lines beneath it. Click to expose the menu at the bottom, which includes a text format button for enlarging text.

“Change the text size for a website
Use the Page Menu button to increase or decrease the text size.

Go to the Safari app on your iPhone.

Tap the Page Menu button on the left side of the search field.

Tap the large A to increase the font size or the small A to decrease it.”

Same results. It’s something in iOS that’s forcing it since all browsers do it

Enlarging it isn’t the problem but when it gets large enough to read I have to scroll left and right to read each line of text. It’s a finger workout to read a story

That’s how you do it on older versions of iOS.

26 is a new animal and it’s stupid

Re notifications: Yeah, welcome to iPOS.

A recent update hosed notification sounds. ALL of us at work are griping about it. Same re camera notifications, etc.

I suspect that with all the noise from customers the next update will correct their FUBAR.

You gotta follow the link above. It's kinda a PITA though.

But if you follow it step-by-step, you'll be able to download the iOS 18 file from ipsw.me (a safe site) and upload it to your iPhone.

You will need a computer though, either a Mac or PC.

Garbage like iOS 26 would've never seen the light of day when Steve Jobs was at the helm. It doesn't even feel like an Apple product. All the Apple intuitiveness is gone. It's totally alien. It's like the Uncanny Valley of Apple operating systems.

Yes, I've been an Apple fanboi for nearly 20 years now but it's not lost on me that the forward thinking vision Jobs encompassed is in decline.

To be clear, I don’t have iOS26, but the same option presents on my phone and I don’t have to scroll.

However, if in the process of playing with features to increase your font size you modified the default PAGE zoom, then you will be stuck scrolling. Access Page zoom under Safari settings (a quick search will show you a dozen vids on how to do it), reset back to 100%. Then access the text zoom settings as shown in this video starting at 2:42.

If they screwed that up too, apologies for my misfire: Should have worked.

Occasionally, I get the option to get a pretty formatted preview (by clicking the “A” option) which is great. Otherwise, I’ll do exactly what you’re doing which I’ve been doing for quite some time.

An Android is high on my list (this is a work phone and I dumped my Windows phone for it; honestly, I’m happy that I waited).
