They are paid.

My husband coached baseball at every level from Tball to high school, and we had seen just about everything. Some coaches who were unbelievable jerks - one called a 5 year old “stupid”, one who had a kid pitch so much in middle school, he destroyed his arm, I could go on and on.

We had umpires who were pretty awful too, at least twice we had drink umps. One couldn’t keep track of balls, strikes and outs, and when confronted tossed all the spectators from both sides from the game. Another was a tournament and the ump was sneaking to the bathroom between innings and downing beers. Coaches thought he was having heat stroke and called 911 (the ambulance and police arrived, he ended up being arrested, right in the middle of the game).

And of course parents who thought their average 5 year old player was going to be the next MLB star. lol. That actually got better over time, by high school most parents were realistic about their son’s chances of going pro, and the ones who were really good enough, the parents didn’t make a big deal about it. Fun times. Our kids loved ball, but we kept it pretty chill.
