The exemplary difference between that era and the topic at hand is that NO ONE can cite a single threat to US security by Russia’s actions in ukeland - or, for that matter, anywhere else - while simultaneously there exist signatures of US meddling in ukeland which conditioned the conflict we see today. This is in stark contrast to security threats to Russia itself posed by the West’s actions there.
