It sounds to me like the murderous anticlerical excesses of the French Revolution.


It almost happened again after the Liberation of Paris in 1945. The Communists were trying to seize control of the city, putting their enemies on trial for alleged collaboration with the Nazis. It was DeGaulle who put a stop to it.

An old Korean War USAF vet recounted a story about sailing to France on an AVT carrying the latest version of the Saber Dog (radar equipped version of the F-86). The French dockyard workers (Le Havre( were all suspected Communists in 1947. Slinging the first F-86D over the side, the crane operator appeared to deliberately drop it hard onto the dock, badly damaging the plane. The ship’s Marine detachment surrounded the plane facing out, weapons hot.

I always suspected that DeGaulle was put up with by SHAEF and the other Western political leaders precisely to counter the heavy communist control of the French Resistance.
