I dont get the wave of sympathy for them? They featured in a Netflix docu but this murder I know was brutal and particularly shocking in 1989.

It was brutal what the father and his associates did to those boys. Mom knew and turned a blind eye.

I think the Menendez brothers did in fact suffer abuse from their father, with their mother as an accomplice. That provides mitigation as to punishment but not an excuse for their crimes.
