Trump announces plan to chop down magnolia tree purportedly planted by Andrew Jackson: 'Must come to an end'

President Donald Trump announced plans to chop down a tree that was said to have been planted by former President Andrew Jackson.

In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump said that he was working with "the wonderful people at the National Park Service" to make "tremendous enhancements to the White House, thereby preserving and protecting History!"

"One of the interesting dilemmas is a tree planted many years ago by the Legendary President and General, Andrew Jackson," Trump described. "It is a Southern Magnolia, that came from his home, The Hermitage, in Tennessee. That’s the good news!"

"The bad news is that everything must come to an end, and this tree is in terrible condition, a very dangerous safety hazard, at the White House Entrance, no less, and must now be removed," he continued.

The historic tree will be chopped down in coming days, and Trump wrote that it will be replaced "by another, very beautiful tree."

"The Historic wood from the tree will be preserved by the White House Staff, and may be used for other high and noble purposes!!!" the president added.

Jackson, who served as president from 1829 to 1837, reportedly planted two magnolia trees near the White House in honor of his wife Rachel, who died in 1828. But according to the National Park Service's (NPS) website, the trees' connection to Old Hickory is debatable.

"Historical photographic documentation shows that magnolias first appeared at this location near the South Portico in the 1860s, still the trees are attributed to President Jackson," the agency explained.

"In 2006, the trees were designated as Witness Trees by the National Park Service, having borne witness to many ‘significant historic and cultural events,’" the NPS described. "The base of the trees also took the brunt of a Cessna airplane crash...

"He is trying to lie his head off and rewrite or destroy history!" a Trump critic wrote. "The tree is much more important than Trump will EVER be!"

Hopefully not your lunatic neighbor.

"He is trying to lie his head off and rewrite or destroy history!"

The same left wing idiots who take down Andrew Jackson statues and monuments want to protect this tree. Trump should just say that he doesn't want a tree planted by a slave owning democrat at the White House. Then sit back and watch heads explode.

Ya know, I planted trees all around the house I built in 1989. One was a live blue spurce Christmas tree in a half barrel. We planted it that next spring. Maybe 4 feet tall. I got older and those trees did too. One silver maple is growing and looks good like a few of the honey locusts I planted. A lot of the trees I planted back then look good. Some don’t, I had to take down an oak that don’t do well in our colder climate and the hickory I enjoyed in the Midwest didn’t do so good out here in Idaho. Then I took some out because back then I put them in the wrong spot. My point being? We are all going to the End of Trail. These trees do ok but now they need to move on and a new sapling needs to take their place. I don’t like making the room but ISWIS.

Wasn’t Andrew Jackson the first Democrat President?

How ironic that the Democrat Party is dying now? How metaphoric is that? May his party die with yhe tree.

I just took the time to read Jackson’s Wiki page. That guy was very dirty politically, and with Taney’s help, he went after all his political enemies.

Jackson purchased a plantation later known as the Hermitage, becoming a wealthy planter who profited off the forced labor of hundreds of enslaved African Americans. He was responsible for stacking the Supreme Court through expansion with his puppet Taney at the helm.

He was responsible for the Indian removal Act that resulted in separation and removal of Native Americans rather than integration. He was responsible for the Trail of Tears. This was done so his government could take their land.

He was called “King Andrew the First”, by the Whigs who formed to oppose his politics. He used tariffs as a political tool.

How fitting that he was the founder and first Democrat President.

Melania Trump Orders Removal of Damaged, 200-Year-Old Tree From White House Lawn
BY DANIEL POLITI
DEC 26, 20171:47 PM

The south facade of the White House will be undergoing a historic change this week when the iconic Jackson Magnolia, which has been in place since shortly after Andrew Jackson’s inauguration in 1829 will be coming down. First Lady Melania Trump made the decision to remove the historic magnolia, which extends from the ground floor of the White house past the second-level executive residence, following expert reports that it was too damaged to stay in place, reports CNN.

Update, Dec. 27, 2017: The Associated Press reported “a large portion of the tree” has now been removed. It’s unclear if the remainder of the tree will eventually be cut down.

I would definitely trust the opinion of the park service arborists on this removal. Washington D.C. experiences high winds in storms, and big old trees falling down is common. It’s an iconic and beautiful tree, but trees don’t last forever and the safety hazard is real. It could damage the White House or even kill someone when it falls.

I attended a party near D.C. at an old house dating from the 1700s that was surrounded by very large trees. A thunderstorm came barreling in and one of the trees fell down about 20 feet from where my car was parked. It could have crushed the whole vehicle. You could see that the tree had rotted inside.

Then in the parking lot where I worked a large branch broke off of an old tree and totally crushed the cab of a pickup truck (luckily unoccupied). I wonder how many people are killed by falling trees every year.

The evergreen "Jackson Magnolia" (Southern Magnolia, Magnolia Grandiflora) is adjacent to the south portico where the president's helicopter lands on the lawn.

Trees to close to any building cause a various problems to the building.

Trees to not live forever.

Over the years I have removed trees around my property because they needed to be.

This one is no different.
