The *real* parallel to what we’re seeing is the “Volkssturm” where late-war Germany whipped up a similar idea of fighting to the end for your country and similarly grabbed the just-fighting-age Hitler Youth and leftovers from WW1 veterans, armed them barely, and sent them forth to suffer 70-80% casualty rates.
The other hideous aspect of this is that for such conscripted units to fight at all (or even remain in place to be blown up) there has to be a better-armed cadre of soldiers ready to kill *them* if they retreat (see Soviet NKVD).

There’s videos all over the internet from Ukraine showing this happening. People that have no business being sent to war, dragged off the street into vans.
It’s overly simplistic to say “Russia is the aggressor”. This has been boiling for a decade or more. Zelenskyy is no hero. Ukraine was an epicenter of corruption. I don’t trust any of it and there’s zero evidence Putin wants to march all over Europe, even eastern Europe. Not everything “is just like Hitler”.
