Every single time one of these 'man shot by dog' stories comes up- and it's multiple times a year, usually a hunting incident though- the first thought in my mind is "what other people were present?"
Throw in the fact that the article says multiple shell casings were found, and this one's pretty suspect as well.
It's entertaining how many of the 'man shot by dog with his own shotgun' stories involve minor injuries, almost always to the head. Seems to imply the gun was aimed up off the ground, but not so upward as to be leaning on something for convenience, and was far enough away that the pattern was spreading out and the shot slowing down. I'm convinced most of those are actually 'buddy accidentally swung through man following a duck and peppered him; they then agreed to blame the dog to avoid legal trouble' stories.
Seriously, I'd love to know what percentage of 'man shot by dog' stories are actually true. My money's on less than 50%.
