John Landis directed it like a composer writing a great score: establishing tone, character themes, suspenseful build-ups, humor breaks, blow-out pay-offs. But for me what tied it all together were the little "throw-aways" that most directors would have left on the cutting room floor for the sake of running time.

Different era of film-making and we're much poorer for it's passing.
