There’s a school of thought (not a big school) saying the iconic bust is a modern fake.
It seems in keeping with the Amarna style, though, realism in sculpture.
Yeah, “fake” has been shouted about the Phaistos Disk, the Minoan “snake goddess”, the treasure from Troy. The Nefertiti bust has been Xrayed or somethin’ (possibly a link up above) showing it had been carved first, then more artfully plastered and painted. There was a German guy I think, who claimed it was a classic fake because one of the eye insets was missing and never found in the sift at the site. I suppose he’d say the same thing if neither inset, or both insets, were present. :^)
