Do you mean DeepSeek?

The article doesn’t say that ByteDance owns DeepSeek, it says they own a different outfit, Doubao:
“DeepSeek’s success has also led to a domestic battle among China’s top AI companies, triggering TikTok owner ByteDance to update its Doubao model and likely prompting Alibaba to announce its own new model“.

DeepSeek was founded by a hedge fund guy from China. I may just as well be a ChiCom front, like every Chinese company. Anything the goverment asks they do.

It is a rumor or open secret ( your choice) that DeepSeek distilled expensive competitor models. Trump’s AI / crypto czar related the rumor that at first, if you asked it “who are you?” it replied “ I am ChatGPT”.

Another story was that if you load it up to play with/evaluate, the agreement states (if you log in using Google id anyway) it may scan your gmail and could send info “home” to China.

So I agree that there is fakery in the form of misrepresentation of benchmarking, potential ChiCom data harvesting, and market manipulation.

On top of that, emerging competitors secretly training on the first movers’ models which were themselves trained on NYT, Facebook, Wikipedia, and other MSM web content further concentrates AI groupthink and AI political correctness. Which then reinfects humans.

Most generative AI models are also innumerate, capable of “hallucination” or “dishonesty”, and unable to explain their own “reasoning”, although, surprisingly, DeepSeek may have improved on the competing technology in some of those respects.
