"Free thought" is a philosophical viewpoint which holds that positions regarding truth should be formed on the basis of logic, reason, and empiricism, rather than authority, tradition, revelation, or dogma.

Our Nimitz class super carriers can squeeze thru the locks also, but not quickly. They have to take down the light poles to clear the outside elevators. But I recall an incident some years back when the boss got the order to get into the Atlantic soonest. He didn’t wait for the poles to come down——just mowed them. The trip cost a few bucks extra but I guess they work that into the budget?

It is startlingly gorgeous scenery. Maybe not Big Sur beautiful, but very lovely in its own way. I was very sad reading the destruction through there. The Reel Inn was kind of a typical Malibu dump, but a friend's band used to play there all the time. Duke's, Moonshadows... all longstanding Malibu and Palisades establishments. And I believe that is why these areas are being destroyed. Can't build a Smart City unless you completely annihilate what is currently there, as the "smart" infrastructure cannot be plugged in to existing infrastructure. Just easier to destroy everything and start from scratch.
I'm waiting to see how legendary locations such as Neptune's Net at Ventura County Line fared... historic local grind and immortalized in The Beach Boys' Surfin' USA as well as Point Break. (It's where Tyler, Lori Petty's character, was working when Keanu Reeves' Johnny Utah met her.) I don't think the fire has gone past Zuma yet, so hopefully all is okay up there.

Federal prosecutors detailed a years-long scheme of tax fraud, ordering an early Bitcoin investor to surrender their keys.

A federal judge has ordered an early Bitcoin investor to surrender encryption keys that could unlock approximately $124 million in crypto, marking an unprecedented move in the U.S. government’s efforts to seize digital assets in tax evasion cases.
According to the order issued by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman on Monday, Ahlgren must disclose all private keys and identify any devices that he used to store crypto, such as hardware wallets.
The order extends beyond just wallet access—Ahlgren and any associates are prohibited from transferring or hiding any digital assets without court approval, though they can use funds for “normal monthly living expenses.”
The order aims to help recover about $1 million in restitution following Ahlgren’s December conviction. Initial coverage of the order first appeared on Bloomberg.
In February last year, federal prosecutors released a seven-count indictment against Richard Ahlgren III, also known as “Paco,” marking the first U.S. criminal tax evasion case centered solely on crypto trading.
The Austin, Texas resident faced three counts of filing false tax returns and four counts of illegal structuring of cash deposits. By December last year, Ahlgren was sentenced to two years in prison for falsely reporting capital gains he earned from selling $3.7 million worth of Bitcoin.
“[...] instead of paying the taxes he knew were due, he lied to his accountant about the extent of a large portion of his gains,” stated Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division in a DOJ press release at the time.
Ahlgren “sought to conceal another chunk of his profits” by using “sophisticated techniques designed to obscure his transactions on the bitcoin blockchain,” Goldberg stated.
The indictment meticulously outlines how Bitcoin transactions work, explaining that while the blockchain is public, Ahlgren allegedly attempted to obscure his activities through multiple techniques.
What makes Ahlgren’s case groundbreaking is its focus on the deliberate manipulation of crypto cost basis calculations and sophisticated attempts to obscure blockchain transactions, effectively creating a playbook for future crypto tax enforcement.

Snail darter revisited: Famous fish that halted a dam’s construction is not endangered after all

.....In 1967, construction began on the Tellico Dam—the aim was to create a reservoir on the Little Tennessee River, approximately 20 miles southwest of Knoxville. The dam construction was led by officials with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Shortly after construction began, a zoologist with the University of Tennessee discovered a previously unknown fish living at the bottom of the river.
A quick study of the fish suggested it was unique and at risk of extinction if the dam was built. That fish, the snail darter, soon became a symbol for the use of an endangered species as a way to prevent the development of projects across the country in the ensuing years.
After the Environmental Protection Agency got into the dispute, the courts became involved. Things were settled when President Jimmy Carter signed a bill exempting the Tellico Dam from protection by the Endangered Species Act—the dam was built and all those involved moved on to other business.
In this new study, the research team took a closer look at the fish involved in the controversy. After conducting standard species identification and classification testing, they discovered that the snail darter was not a unique or endangered fish after all. Instead, it was a member of the stargazing darter species, which is present and plentiful in many places in the U.S.
The researchers conclude their paper by declaring the snail darter was a phantom all along—there never was such a fish species. They suggest the research team who initially studied the fish were more interested in stopping the construction of the dam than in saving a fish species. They describe it as an early example of the “conservation species concept”—where people or groups declare a species at risk to help achieve a larger conservation goal.
