What hijacker, in his right mind, after jumping out of an airplane, in the dead of night, in a heavily forested area, is going to pack up his parachute, in pitch darkness, then take it home and hide it? What idiot would do that?

“Let me keep this incriminating parachute at my house. I might need it again.”

The thinking is that the hijacker had an accomplice on the ground who picked him up. Taking the parachute and unique harness with him deprived the authorities of potential clues to his identity. My guess is that the hijacker also had a walkie talkie, a compass, and a powerful flashlight with him when he jumped.

A parachute can be traced to the vendor and thus in all probability to whom purchased it. It was evidence he did not want to leave behind.
