I think they also feared an internecine bloodbath. Once Joe endorsed her (and he wasted little time doing so), he really tied their hands.

Their only other option was to open up the process into an honest contest and risk blowing up the entire party, including vulnerable down ticket races, in a nationally televised civil war.

They had only bad options and took the less destructive one.
