The 2006 election was the Democrat wave election when Dubya screwed up both the Katrina response and the Iraq War.
This election had a lot of Democrats who looked and acted like Republicans when campaigning (Tester with his crewcut, Tim Walz with his retired CSM schtick, Heath Shuler with his football career, etc.).
Once they got elected to office, they might as well have started wearing Mao jackets because they were going to do what Komrade Pelosi told them to do.

Bush didn't "screw up" the Katrina response, Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin did. Bush screwed up the political fallout afterwards by underestimating the Democrat-media alliance that shifted the blame to him.
It wasn't Bush who delayed in asking for national guard support before the storm, it was Blanco who feared it would make Bush look good.
It wasn't Bush who left buses stranded in parking lots instead of evacuating people, it was Nagin.
It wasn't Bush who diverted money for levee maintenance to crony projects, it was the Democrats who ran New Orleans who did that.
