In intestinal surgery it is common to try and sterilize the gut with antibiotics prior to surgery. Your gut bacteria is restored by what you eat which is full of microbes.

In rare cases not related to surgery a gut bacteria is bad and detrimental. Gut bacteria are essential to digestion. We infuse the gut bacteria to restore the proper colonies. In effect infuse feces. It works.
