Is Anybody There?

"Is anybody there?" "Does anybody care?" Does anybody see what I see?

They want me to quit They say, "John, give up the fight!" Still, to England, I say: "Good night, forever good night!"

For I have crossed the Rubicon Let the bridge be burned behind me! Come what may, come what may Commitment!

The croakers all say We'll rue the day There'll be hell to pay In fiery purgatory

Through all the gloom Through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light And glory

Is anybody there? Does anybody care? Does anybody see what I see? “Is anybody there? Does anybody care?

(spoken) Does anybody see what I see?”

To which a voice answers, “Yes, Mr. Adams. I do.” (It’s Dr. Lyman Hall.)

“Dr. Hall! How long have you been there?”

“Long enough, John.”

Have watched the movie every July 4 for many years. Started with our kids, and now they’re sharing with their kids. Full disclosure, I played John Adam’s in my elementary school’s production of the play back in the day. Way back in the day.

When I was in High School, we went on a field trip to see this movie in Philadelphia for our History Class.
Sadly, non of us were mature enough to appreciate it.
As I do now.

John Adams: I do believe you’ve laid a curse on North America / A curse that we here now rehearse in Philadelphia! / A second flood, a simple famine, plagues of locusts everywhere, or a cataclysmic earthquake I’d accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress. / Good God, sir, was that fair? / You see, we piddle, twiddle, and resolve, not one damn thing do we solve / Piddle, twiddle, and resolve / Nothing’s ever solved / In foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy Philadelphia!

We were fortunate enough to see the play done professionally in a Philly theater when we lived in PA., and the movie we’ve watched too many times to count.
We actually learned history from this marvelous show well after high school and college.

Loved 1776. Had a tape of the soundtrack, and I know every song by heart.

My favorite is "We're waiting for the chirp, chirp, chirp... of an eaglet being born... we're waiting for the tap, tap, tap, or that tiny little fellow in this... congressional incubator, Lord knows the temperature is hot enough... to hatch a stone... let alone an egg!"

I saw it done live in Chicago. I always remember the intensity of the song concerning the slave trade. It was something when experienced live.
