An 83-year-old South Carolina woman visiting Yellowstone National Park was gored by a bison Saturday.
The bison was “defending its space” near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake when it “came within a few feet of the woman and lifted her about a foot of the ground with its horns,” the National Park Service says in a Monday evening press release announcing the goring.
It’s the first goring in Yellowstone this summer season, but not the first bison attack. That happened in April when an Idaho man was roughed up by a bison after kicking it while drunk.
The elderly woman in Saturday’s attack sustained serious injuries, the NPS reports, and was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
While seriously wounded by the large animal, just how badly she was injured or her condition wasn’t known, and the NPS reports it has “no additional information to share at this time.”
Storm Point Trail runs along Indian Pond and near Yellowstone Lake, according to NPS.gov, and hikers and visitors are usually waned to be aware of bear activity in the area.
Although the bison reportedly reacted defensively, the National Park Service didn’t release any information about what brought the 83-year-old within striking range of it. However, the agency doubles down on its warning that “wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous.”
Of the unfortunate wildlife-human encounters in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem “bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” according to the NPS. “Bison are not aggressive animals, but will defend their space when threatened. They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.”

Europe has bison also, but not quite as big as their American cousins.................
Geez — did she try to ride it?

Attention Florida Man: You have a challenger!
I read a Thomas Sowell reflection on the passing scene that went something like:
Modern humans like to brag about how smart they have become because of technology, but no one had to warn a 19th century farmer out on the planes not to mess with a 3000 lbs animal that can run at 30 mph.
I’ve tried to find the specific quote but have never been successful.
On our Yellowstone thread mocking these idiots, they are called Tourons.
So it’s open season on humans then since humans act viciously for no reason. I’d rather respect an animal’s defense of it’s personal space than excuse a brain dead tourist who acted stupidly.
“They believe what?”
“They believe if they ride bikes it will change the weather.”
“Bwa-ha-ha. Really?”
“Yep. And they piled in a car and drove for three days just to see us, and that water that’s too hot to drink.”
“Incredible.”
Serice with a smile!
When I saw signs in Yellowstone National Park warning visitors not to get too close to a buffalo, I realized that this was a warning that no illiterate farmer of a bygone century would have needed. No one would have had to tell him not to mess with a huge animal that literally weighs a ton, and can charge at you at 30 miles an hour.
No one would have had to tell that illiterate farmer’s daughter not to stand by the side of a highway, trying to hitch a ride with strangers, as too many college girls have done, sometimes with results that ranged all the way up to their death.

Moments later, traffic stopped, as a bison was walking on the other lane in our direction. It passed within several feet of my car…I got a great video of it. We didn’t make a sound.
Shortly after he passed by, my grandson proclaimed “Opa, I’m not bored anymore.”
And they vote.
JayGalt:
I owe you one. Thank you very much!
Pilot
Im entirely against that. They barely fit into the booth and always mark the boxes so sloppily that its difficult to guess who they were voting for.
That’s what the buffalo thought granny was trying to do to it.
I’ve got a couple stitch marks on me from my parents old Chow dog. Shoulder and hand.
83 years old? Sounds like a bad case of "Too soon old, too late smart."
It’s not every day you run into bison in South Carolina. But the general “large, temperamental, ornery, mean, man-killing and man-goring animal” rule still applies.
With a serious case of eczema like that, no wonder he’s a bit fussy.
he tried!!
