You could be right, but I can see how that could not be the case. It requires cheating, which is common enough. Radicalized people cheat. If a small minority is easily radicalized, they can be motivated to cheat. This gets you an extremely radical candidate, as in this case.
It took a golden coffin, touring the country, to get blacks to stay up all night working over the voting machines in Atlanta. I doubt they would have shown up without the influence.
I had always thought that an election would get a majority of people what they wanted. I am trying to figure out how that is not the case.
