“We cannot prosecute and arrest our way out of it”

However, I do not live in that city.
Since this is what the voters of that city have chosen, I have to respect their choice.
How about we just shoot the criminals on site.
Giuliani did it in NYC, this guy is in the wrong line of work
Of course we can’t. So let’s just disband all police forces, repeal all laws, fire all the prosecutors and judges, and raze the prisons. That should do the trick, no?
Following on from this once could conclude the entire law enforcement and justice system should be abandoned and anarchy reign. Somehow leftists won’t go that far though. The systemt will be reserved as a political weapon for them. Already is as far as we can tell.
Pyongyang and Teheran are safe compared to the capital of our collapsed society.
Build a halfway house for criminal next to his mansion - or on the same floor of the building he lives in - - no matter the cost.
He’ll discover the obvious - yes, YOU can lower the crime rate by taking thugs off the streets and putting them in jail.
Start by locking him up.
Then lock up all of the DC Public School personnel and then all of of the employees of the WaPo.
Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb said the following about crime: “We cannot prosecute and arrest our way out of it”

....unless you are talking about January 6th and conservatives. Then folks in Washington leave no stone unturned.
I partially agree. Ultimately, there isn’t enough money and aren’t enough police and prisons to end crime, and the only way a society gets beyond crime is if a high enough percentage of the population won’t commit crime because they morally believe it is wrong and because they want to do the right thing - independent of whether or not they are afraid of being caught and prosecuted.
If the only deterrence to crime in America is fear of punishment, we are in big trouble. Unfortunately, for too many this is the only deterrence.
If you don’t see your fellow citizens as good people deserving of happiness and a good life, or worse if you feel that they are privileged people who deserve their comeuppance, you can justify to yourself making them targets and committing crimes that hurt them. This is where we are right now. Further, there are too many people in public office and in the political bureaucracy who feel this way.
When there are no morals as a guide to actions in society no system of government will work, and that society is doomed.
Good for him. We need to tolerate some level of crime in DC that is proportional to historic racism.
“ I have to respect their choice.”
No, you don’t.
“Congress SHALL have the power… To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States…”
There is no legitimate authority over DC besides the Congress which represents all the people and all the states. It belongs to all of us. The so-called “DC government” is an anti-constitutional farce.
The phrase “in all cases whatsoever” had a specific meaning in 1788 which was well-known to every single member of the Constitutional Convention, it was taken directly from one of the so-called “Intolerable Acts” passed by the British Parliament, and they were dead serious about preventing ANY manifestation of “local government” in OUR Federal district.
I don’t like what this elite liberal has said but in a way he is right, even if he does not understand why.
Right now our society is spending a trillion dollars a year or more on educational systems committed to destroying young people with hideous notions.
We have put hundreds of thousands of the worst people in the world in charge of our children.
Our schools and universities are pumping out millions of students a year that can’t tell right from wrong and that are programmed to do wrong.
We are not going to correct that dynamic by building more prison cells. We just aren’t.
I was born in DC, lived right outside all of my life, and worked in the District for many years.
I never had a worry driving down there, using the Metro, walking around the City - until very recent years.
They can fix it; they just don’t want to.
You can't keep the population safe, if you allow criminals to remain on the street to commit more crimes, and make more victims. All you are doing is enabling and perpetuating crime waves, and you are destroying your city.
Because of plea deals, nobody does the time for the actual crime they committed. They are rewarded from the beginning, by being given the option to plea to a lesser sentence. Victims and their families get no justice whatsoever.
I spent 25 years in uniform working in New York State's prison system. I've always believed that prisons should be so tough that no one would ever want to go back. But they aren't tough anymore.
Wait. DC has an attorney general? How did that happen?
It is really amazing how that works.
People like to pontificate on "the root cause of crime". The root cause of crime is the belief that you can get away with it. It is not complicated.
Karma is when carjackers started gunning down K-Street lobbyists on K-street, not understanding that K-street bought and paid for the policy to be adopted everywhere in the country except K-street. The stupid is so bad it hurts way over in the West of Virginia.
