A rumored sale of CNN to its onetime CEO could see the network come under foreign influence as one industry insider has warned much of the money could come from the United Arab Emirates.
Ivan Schlager of Kirkland & Ellis - an expert on foreign influence regulation - made the assertion on Monday, as the network could face being sold by boss David Zaslav and ousted Jeff Zucker emerging as a frontrunner to snap it up.
Just over a year ago, Zucker, who has close business ties Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments, was forced to resign 15 years into his CNN tenure after the company found he was having a relationship with a fellow staffer.
After the surprise nixing of his replacement, former Late Show boss Chris Licht, the 58-year-old is allegedly ready to take the helm again - by shelling out what could be billions for the struggling news station.
But according to Schlager, such a transaction could prove troublesome, given much of Zucker's money could actually be quiet investments from the Middle Eastern country.
Schlager told news site Semafor how an increasing amount of these high-profile sales have involved funds from either the Saudis or Quataris, often to little attention.
The government of the latter - an oil-rich nation that borders the UAE - already funds Al Jazeera, a global news network that Schlager said could serve as a precursor of what's to come if CNN sells to Zucker to the tune of billions.
Lamenting the prospect of 'another Al Jazeera' to Semafor, Schlager said there was still hope - if Congress blocks the deal over concerns of foreign backing.
He cited how a similar sale of Forbes to Indian investment firm Sun Group has been held for months over such political concerns.

Amazing. All they had to do was clean house, come up with their own “fair and balanced” motto and turn honest, and they could have been a contender. They’d rather be a propaganda outlet for a foreign power than do their job honestly
Not surprised. Nothing in CNN reporting will change.
CNN has a bad case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. And it shows in their ratings. CNN has potential if they just got back to their roots.
While Zucker was in charge, CNN’s format was “Anti-Trump, all the time.” Does he plan to do that again, should he succeed in taking over?
Won’t matter. Cable industry is on the verge of allowing customers to pick/chose what they want, and I’d expect more than half of nation remaining on cable TV to opt for zero CNN. Their ‘take’ from the cable industry will lessen to a great degree, and I see them losing half or more of their current value within five years. Buying them at this point....makes no sense.
Wasn't that part of the plot of the movie Network?
True, it went through its useful life cycle then got hijacked. In the beginning Ted Turner had an American enterprise but the older he got, the more leftist it became.
That trajectory did not change and as a result, the people are rejecting it, management is failing with their BS agendas.
Now, as a failing enterprise, it’s ripe to be dumped.
The last thing needed is for a foreigner like Kim of north Korea to come and buy it to spout his anti American crap.
We already see enough coming out of Hollywood.
All the anti American propaganda is sickening.
Al Jazeera does FAR BETTER reporting on the US, and most of the world, than any US network, as they don’t answer to the Neocons/Globalists (Ukraine War supporters), as the US Networks do. It will be a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT over what we have now, and perhaps Americans will FINALLY start to see that the US is GETTING CLOBBERED around the world far worse than we did, even during Jimmy Carter’s day.
About the only reporting worthy of suspicion from Al Jazeera is regarding the Middle East, which is their backyard - one should check multiple sources before believing what they say.
So basically, no change.
Cable news is in palliative care. Boomers have either cut the cord or are dying each day. Young folks don’t even have cable. Personally, I cut the cord years ago and get my news from a number of other sources. I see cuts cable news opinion shows when others play them as part of their streaming or links in articles. Quite honestly, I could do without them because it simply echoing stuff that nobody wants to watch; generally to create some outrage.
And Fox News owned by non-Americans is not an issue? Seems like there is a lot of foreign ownership of our media already.
So people are getting their knickers in a knot about XiNN’s sale to the UAE?!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

SSDD.
I needed a laugh to start my day.
So, like Fox, which has a huge Saudi ownership.
INN. Infidel News Network.
I dunno, how could anyone tell the difference between CNN and AL JAZEERA anyway?
I dunno, how could anyone tell the difference between CNN and AL JAZEERA anyway?
++++++++++++++
Yes you can tell the difference. Easily. Al Jazeera is a much better news source.
So basically, no change.
no it would really Dead ,LOL
You get more honest reporting out of Al Jazeera America than you get out of CNN. Seriously, watch and compare the two.
