My mom was from Trieste, Italy. After WWII, they didn’t know if Trieste would go to the US or Soviet territories. Trieste was aligned with the US but everything east of it that used to be Italy became part of Yugoslavia. Some relatives that lived there lost everything, their nice country homes were taken and their cars too.
Only thing the gummint actually takes care of is itself.
