Are there really any border towns, where there is both a Mexican and a US half of the towns where US citizens can visit the Mexican side briefly for shopping and come back without terrible risk? Maybe by foot traffic even, in groups?
I’ve heard for a long time that it is a bad idea to take an American car there to drive, maybe you cannot even rent cars to take there? Sigh.

Border towns used to be that way. You could walk across the river, spend a day in Mexico and have a good dinner or something else. Those days are gone. Do NOT take any kind of vehicle into Mexico. Rent car companies make it very clear that their cars are not to go into Mexico. Over the last 20 years the cartels have taken over local governments, then states now they run the country. The federales are there for show.
