'For What?' Man Complains After Being Prompted To Tip 20% For Takeout Pizza Order

Tipping culture in the United States varies greatly from other countries where workers are paid a fair wage.

Instead, it falls on customers in the US to make up for the shortcomings of our government and employers who don't fairly compensate workers.

That being said, there are times when a large tip seems a little excessive and disproportionate to the service received.

That issue is what prompted one TikTok user @thejmancomesquick to post a video of himself complaining after an awkward encounter at a pizza restaurant.

He was asked to tip 20% for takeout pizza. “What is with everyone thinking they deserve a tip now?” He questioned.

Yep. How do you define whom should get a tip or not? I don’t get a tip in my work. Why not? If I’m encouraging prompt service for a tailored product (e.g. a meal, a drink at the bar, ...), also expecting you to get the custom order correct and not bring something different, then fine. These people are often running their a** off.

Making me a sandwich when I’m just next in line doesn’t count. Making me a pizza I’m picking up doesn’t count. None of these people are running their a** off or doing anything special only for me. They’re usually temporary entry level jobs that are dropped once somebody has more knowledge and experience. That is what they’re for. Making me a coffee, when I’ve waiting in line and you’re not running your a** off doesn’t count. I might make an exception if they are.

...but nobody seems to be able to define a clear rule. Wait staff don’t get paid minimum wage, this is why it is a traditional environment for tipping.

They upped their game. I normally go to a local place, but sometimes can’t.

But won’t go now.

I also saw that they are adding tips to fast food places.

We have stopped going to sit down places because of the 20-40% tip demands.

As food costs increase due to Biden, I believe tipping percentage should decrease. The waiter doesn’t work harder for the increased fee.

Say a restaurant increases menu 15%. My paycheck didn’t go up i by that so why should I pay more in tips?

This happened to me at a self-serve Frozen Yogurt place the other night. I hit “No Tip”.

Papa Murpy’s

i love that place but asking for tips on the checkout screen turned a once a week trip into once every couple of months or so

I have a small account at a credit union. About two years ago they began pulling $5 a month as a fee for not being an active account but never sent any statements to let us know.

They have refunded some but not all of it.

I’m about ready to close the account. In all likelihood I’m their oldest customer. My grandfather founded the credit union 60 years ago and I hold account #4.

I’m surprised their poor customer service doesn’t see that.

Yep, many places asking for tips even for carry out. They want a 20% tip for services? Fine but get my freaking order correct then! I really don’t remember the last time my carry out order was 100 percent correct. Screw the tip, if they don’t care enough to ensure correct orders why should I subsidize their laziness.

Tipping is for paying the waitress extra for attentive service.

For a takeout order, the place doesn’t get the expense of clearing your table, washing your plates and utensils, etc, so why should they expect extra?

If anything, they should give you a DISCOUNT for takeout.

I noticed the default “tip” on a credit card reader was 20% with no other option except “other.” 20% to get 2 beers for me and a friend? When the beers are already $6 a pint? Come on man.

So rather than kvetch, why not just not tip? I really don’t think they expect you to.

So why not hit "other" and $0? What is the big deal?

Sorry if you had to CLICK TWICE. Oh, the humanity.

I choose $0 tip if I’m picking up the order. The tipping culture needs to end.

Oh, so they want it. Well, people in Hell want ice water.

Look, just don't tip. They really don't expect you to, most people don't. But they're fine with you throwing a few bucks at the help if you are so inclined.

I can't remember when I have ever seen a bigger bunch of cranky old f@rts then those expressing the pointless (and I think misplaced) ire on this thread. For crying out loud, pull on your big boy pants and suck it up.

Help me out here. Are you afraid of what the pimply, tattooed green-haired androgynous high school kid is going to think when you hit the "0%" tip button? They hate you anyway. Any goodwill you think that will generate will be gone before you go through the door.

And here is some useful advice: Take a laxative or something. Usually this kind of crankiness comes from being constipated.

I like to tip. Usually *WAY* too much. I have enough money. I’d rather give a five spot to the poor schlub standing at the counter making my sandwich than see some A-hole preacher or CEO with a private jet or supercar get one cent of my income.

May people who don’t tip joyously lose everything and have to work a minimum wage, no benefits, on your feet crap job until they die.

I have more respect for the pizza delivery guy than any SOB in a corner office with a personal assistant and an expense account.

Tipping says everything about the state of one’s soul, very little about the service received.

When I pick up a pizza, a screen asks me what I want to tip - 20%, 15%, 10% or 0%

I hate that!

I intentionally pay cash at a local coffee shop because of that. If I’m paying a couple of bucks for a slice of apple pie , it just doesn’t seem right the POS (Point Of Sale) console wants me to proactively chip in extra... before I’ve even tried the pie.

I don't see too many offering a 0% option - usually it starts at 15%.

There is at least an "other" option.
