Covid and flu spread more quickly in winter so, if you’re pregnant, the best thing you can do to stay safe is to boost your immunity with free vaccinations

Covid and flu jabs reduce the risk of serious complications from both diseases – and you can get them at any stage of your pregnancy. If you haven’t had a booster dose in over six months, you’re up to three times more likely to be hospitalised with Covid-19.

Dr Robyn Powell is a consultant in emergency medicine, founder and CEO of Breastfeeding for Doctors, and a mum of three. She knows how dangerous Covid can be for pregnant women – and how easy it is to protect yourself. “It’s really important for pregnant women to get their Covid-19 booster because they could become seriously ill from infection,” she explains.

“The Covid vaccine is the best way to protect you and your baby. I’d strongly recommend pregnant women get the vaccine because we know it’s safe and the risks involved with getting a Covid infection are so much more serious.

“The Covid vaccine isn’t live so it can’t cause an infection, and therefore an infection can't be passed on to the baby. There is evidence that vaccination in pregnancy may help prevent Covid-19 hospital admissions of babies in the first six months of life.”

There’s also seasonal flu to think about, which is important to get vaccinated against as the virus strains can change each year. It’s free for many adults and children, including pregnant women.
