Amazon’s woke (and boring) reimagining of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rings universe is bleeding viewers when it should be snowballing.
According to the far-left Hollywood Reporter, “The Rings of Power had 988 million minutes of viewing time in the United States from Sept. 12 to 18, per Nielsen (the show’s fourth episode debuted Sept. 16). That’s a decline of about 18 percent from the previous week’s 1.2 billion minutes.”
That’s a big decline, especially when Amazon is releasing new episodes every week. When a streamer dumps an entire season at one time, it makes sense for the show to decline in intensity as the weeks’ pass. Rings of Power is losing viewers when it should be gaining viewers. At the very least, if the show was any good (it’s not), the same number of viewers should be tuning in. Instead, people appear to be giving up. What Amazon was really hoping for here, which is why Amazon spent a billion — with a “B” — to produce this boondoggle, was a cultural phenomenon, a game-changer…
*snip*
Critics gushed over Rings, but who trusts those rent-seekers anymore?
The backlash against Rings from the public reminds me of what happened to the Star Wars films. And we all know what happened to those.
Amazon has committed to five seasons of Rings. I suggest it start firing some people and hire mature, experienced (including in the real world) storytellers.
When the analysts are falling asleep…
Amazon can attack us as racist, attack us as sexist, and hide bad reviews, but it can’t make us watch.
These smug, insulting shows deserve to tank.

I think we all remember when our HS English teachers taught us that the first few paragraphs of any composition (same lesson applies to film) must grab the readers by the throat.
"Rings" handed me a nice cup of Sleepy Time tea.
HBO's "House of the Dragon" on the other hand, has so far been excellent.
I avoid anything “woke”. I won’t even say “I just woke up” to my wife. “I’m up”, “Got up a while ago” etc.
I’m a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy and I loved the Tolkien books as well as the movie trilogy.
I have zero interest in Amazon’s rings of power, I stopped watching the new Star Wars after the first one of those stinkbombs and I have zero interest in any of the current Star Trek TV series.
Stop infecting everything with your woke BS. Stop insisting on shoving ethnic minority, gay, handicapped, transsexuals in my face at every turn, stop trying to shove your disgusting leftist politics down my throat with every episode and I *might* be interested again. Keep pushing all that crap and I’ll keep tuning you out - and in normal circumstances I’d be your prime audience!
This production seems to care more about DEI representation than a great story line and believable characters.
Same.
It’s so boring!!
I don’t think either are great, but they’re not so bad either. They’ve improved as the story unfolds. Both took way too long to unfold their stories, about 4 episodes for both dragons and rings. So, they built slowly is an understatement. Rings has finally found an unlikely Sauron as an opponent. Dragons finally has a war of succession. Each get a 3.5 out of 5. A B. At the same time, I don’t see the wokeness.
“House of the Dragon” follows the path of Game of Thrones, with a great script...no woke crap apparent, and decent acting.
From 30 minutes of watching ‘Rings of Power’...either they hire new script-writers, or the whole thing is gone after the first season.
I watched the first three episodes and the plot was slow and boring but the graphics were beautiful. I will probably tune in again sometime. The characters acted like they were too stupid to live (barging into a new society and insulting everyone, releasing a captured giant, that made no sense.)
I don’t know who the writer is (writers are) but it sure isn’t Tolkien
So happy
I have learned that the more “Must See!” and “This movie is Awesome” advertising they push after the release of a show, the more it disappoints. A great show will spread by word of mouth. Why waste advertising dollars if viewers are praising the product. FB had non-stop, back-to-back ads trying to generate interest in ROP for the last month. Most of the user comments are “it’s not that bad” or “it takes a few episodes to get into it”. It must really be bombing.
I tried. I started the first three episodes and fell asleep each time. I’m done.
This isn’t limited to Rings of Power. I reached a point, by now quite a few years past, at which I developed an allergic reaction to franchise bloat. This probably started with Star Wars. I am a harder and harder sell on endless sequels.
Old business axiom that is always true:
Good products don't have to be sold, just presented to prospective customers.Bad products are the ones with the hard sell or aggressive ad campaign. They need it.
You mean people don’t want to be preached at by a bunch of Communists?
How about coffee?
I watched the first 15 minutes of Amazon’s “Rings.” Without intending to, I fell asleep and had a really restful nap.

Ha ha! I had the same reaction. The show is excellent if one is suffering from insomnia.
To top if off, some of the casting and acting is just dreadful, including one of the main characters playing Galadriel.
In the original Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy, Galadriel was perfectly portrayed. The actress was able to convey a sense of great power simply with her facial expression. The ROP/Amazon Galadriel by contract comes across more like a prototypical Karen. Zero likability.
I gave up on the rings after it taking 3 or 4 trys on first couple of episodes. It just wasn’t compelling or even plausible. It did make me interested to re-watch LOR.
My all time fav series AHS also crashed and burned with it’s latest NYC gay series...gag me with a maggot.
