Pit bulls are “friendly” until they aren’t. I was once bitten by a German shepherd while I was walking down the sidewalk. The dog bit me in the calf from behind. But he bit and let go. Pit bulls clamp on and stay.
A few decades ago, an upper middle class couple I knew, got a pit bull pup. It was their baby. Lovingly raised it. Then turned on the wife when she was sitting on the couch with it. Her husband had to shoot it because he couldn’t get the dog off of her. They could never figure out what set the dog off.
A couple of years ago I met a woman who was still quite heavily bandaged. She was going to her car in a parking lot when a pit bull sprang out of the car adjacent to hers and attacked her. The pit bull’s owner said her dog had never attacked anyone before.
I saw a news story years, ago, when a babysitter was watching a four year old girl at her home, and the pit went nuts and attacked the child. She started biting on the pit’s ear as hard as she could, and the pit let go.
Another story was a woman defended her dog by stabbing the pit with a filet knife while walking her dog, because pits were always loose in the area.
