L.P. If the flotsam has beached is it still flotsam or is there another name for it? And does it belong to the original ship owner or to an insurer like Lloyds of London or to some pack of scavenging beachcombers that secure the beached items? (I think you had a post on this recently!)

The answer to your questions depends mostly on where the wreck occurred. I am neither an Admiralty Attorney nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I mostly focused on creating wrecks, on demand.

The post you referred to concerned The Receiver of Wreck.

If you ever watched Poldark, there were several episodes where the starving miners of Cornwall would watch the beaches for wreckage. This was in the late 1700s/early 1800s and the Crown was sending all grain to Europe to sell at inflated prices while the citizens were starving. One of these grain cargoes wrecked off the coast and all men, women and children were on hand to scavenge the wreckage. They were all arrested and imprisoned for stealing from the Crown. It’s fictional, but entirely based on true events.

Thanks! I will consider it flotsam! I have no idea of the location but lets assume some far off SWPAC coast where every thing falls under finders keepers salvage laws!

And we all appreciate your service and preparedness to do so! (Thank you!)
