I had a patient once who may have been Jamaican. He had dreadlocks unlike anything that I had ever before seen. A lot of grey in them, but while he lay supine in his bed, sedated, with HOB elevated more than 30°, the ends of his locks lay on the floor underneath the bed. It was very thick. I could only guess about the time it took to grow such a mop, but it was certainly not overnight.

I sensed that there was a lot of weight to all of that hair and it must have kept his neck muscles in rather decent condition. I do not believe that I could describe it adequately. Cannot take pics in those rooms however.

When I was in Honolulu, I used to see this homeless guy who had thick dreads that were all matted together all the way past his rear end—like one giant dreadlock. He used to lay on the bus stop bench near Ala Moana shopping center and I always thought it was clever that he carried a soft bedroll and pillow with him all the time.

Medusa! :-)

Reminds me in a way of the Indian mystics / fakirs who had fingernails that seemed to be 2 feet long. I always wonder . . . HOW? How do they do it?
