Europe is at Defcon 2 because European leaders anticipate that Putin simply cannot afford to lose this war and will go nuclear against Ukraine.

Once that genie is out of the bottle, it will be tit-for-tat nuclear strikes from EU nations and Russia that may lead to general nuclear war in Europe.
