This jihadi wasn't even born yet when the original fatwa was issued against Rushdie. I imagine the brainwashing and propaganda are very powerful in that culture, being passed down from generation to generation.

Additionally; the security apparatus for Rushdie was apparently non-existent. Not a good idea when one has a fatwa on their heads. The jihadis appear to be very patient, and will strike when one's guard is down even if it means waiting 34 years for the opportunity.
