THE ARMY OF VIRGINIA: Highly Important Movements in Progress; Our Pickets Driven Back Across the Rapidan (8/10/1862)

SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE TIMES.

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Aug. 9.

Government officers, arrived from Culpepper Court-house this morning, bring highly important intelligence from POPE's army. His pickets had been thrown out on the southern bank of the Rapidan. Early on Friday morning they were attacked by the enemy in superior force and driven across the river. As soon as the information reached Culpepper Courthouse, McDOWELL's corps was ordered forward, and in a short time started -- HARTSUFF's and CRAWFORD's brigades trading the advance. The troops were in splendid fighting trim, and in the best of spirits. BANKS' corps followed MCDOWELL's, and all moved straight toward the point where our pickets had been driven across the Rapidan, some 10 or 12 miles from Gordonsville.

About 5 in the afternoon heavy firing was heard at Culpepper Court-house, in the direction of the Rapidan, and people generally believed that a severe engagement was going on. The better opinion, however, seemed to be that only an artillery fight was going on across the river, and that, under cover of our artillery, our troops were assuming the advance line of defence for the masking of our army along the north bank of the Rapidan -- at the same time, perhaps, dislodging the rebels who had driven in our pickets from their positions on the other side. Some insisted that POPE would push steadily on, without stopping, to Gordonsville; others believed the dispositions of the troops hardly completed for such a movement yet, and that they would not have left Culpepper Court-house but for the rebel attack on our pickets.

Gen. POPE had left headquarters at Sperryville, and was understood to be personally directing movements.

The Times misspelled Culpeper. Imagine that.

I see the government of Lincoln has risen from the grave and is once again bullying it's way thru the south and trying to scare and threatening imprisonment on it's detractors.

I give you Biden and a pelousy/ schumer run house and Senate, the Federal courts, the IRS, the FDA, the department of the environment, The DEA, DHS, TSA, department of education, the CIA and the FBI. And the ATF.

There's more but I've run out of pixels and tired of sharing the obvious with the oblivious like homer "idiot" simpson

The Deep State, as we presently know it, was initiated by Saint Abraham, and his merry band of arsonists, rapists, and murderers.

But, Big Brother, as always, has a different narrative for the proletariat to swallow.
