Woke Food Lovers Have Lost Their Minds Over ‘Cultural Appropriation’
New York Post ^ | August 6, 2022 | Steve Cuozzo

When Kermit the Frog found El Sleezo Cafe, a stereotypically Mexican joint in 1979’s “The Muppet Movie,” he nervously muttered, “Foreign food … but a man’s gotta eat.” Never mind that the house special turned out to be frog’s legs — such a scene today would go straight to the cutting-room floor and the creators exiled to Cancelville.

Once upon a time, it was permissible to make light-hearted fun of cuisines that were unfamiliar or exotic to film audiences.

But in today’s unforgiving and witless world of Indigenous-Cuisine Purity, good-natured jokes are strictly verboten. Worse, just about any dish not from Western Europe that isn’t cooked by a native-born chef is either a fake version of the cuisine or a wicked ripoff of it — or both.

Who pays attention to these wokesters? I’m sure nobody in Mexico cares. I’ve had great cuisine in Europe and Mexico. I’m up for trying different foods. People love it when you like their food.

The proper response to these joyless scolds is to grin back at them while chewing noisily.

Being a woke leftist means that you have absolutely no sense of humor.

The problem with Woke reasoning (if you can call it "reasoning") is that it is based on pretend reasoning...on pretend reality.

So the question is: which culture will endure? One based on a reality which is time-tested, rational, empirical, scientific, mathematically correct, and experience-grounded? Or one based on a pretend reality--a reality that is based on your wishes, based on your feelings, one that, for all of human history, has never been tested?

Speaking of Woke reality as having never been tested, I read the other day that a Wokester now declared that she was a bird. That's her reality now.

I challenge her to demonstrate her reality. Climb up on the roof of a house and step off. If she is a bird, no problem. She will take wing.

If not, I guess we can conclude that reality isn't as fluid as the Wokesters say it is.

A few days ago I saw a video of a young man wearing a poncho, sombrero, a fake mustache and holding a pair of maracas.

He asked a bunch of students if his outfit was offensive.

To a whine they said it was.

He then went down to the part of town where there are many Mexicans.

He asked them.

To a man they said, "no, looks good on you bud!"

That’s the reaction of normal people. It just proves that wokesters aren’t normal people. I’d feel sorry for them if they weren’t so destructive.

Is serving pizza when one isn’t Italian cultural appropriation if it is in Jordan or Thailand? I wonder.

Or is it only improper if as a White, western (American) one eats something that only a really starved attention whore (read leftist trying to qualify for the progressive Olympics) could come up with.

Makes me wonder just how guilty I am, and what penance is due, for eating Chinese food at a Mexican-American owned & operated restaurant in Show-Low, AZ some 30 years ago?

Were there any swine or bovine in the new world before the Europeans brought them?

-Domesticated cattle were introduced to the Caribbean in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, and between 1493 and 1512, Spanish colonists.

-Hernando De Soto, a Spanish explorer, was the first to introduce domestic swine (family Suidae) to the mainland of North America. During his exploration throughout the southeastern United States (red line shown above), he and his men brought along domestic swine from Europe for food.

What were they putting in those tacos before then? Looks like the Indigens have some splainin to do.

Better, pick your teeth at them, Maori style.

It’s beyond silly. Where did this so-called appropriation start and where did it start?

I visited Taos Pueblo yesterday. There are outdoor adobe ovens used to make bread. The tour guide told us that these didn’t exist before the Spanish come. Is that appropriation? Should they tear those down? And if I decided to build one in my backyard, exactly who am I appropriating from? When we were leaving, a young man passed us- he was probably 8 years old or so. He was riding a bicycle, wearing jeans and tennis shoes and a Batman ball cap, and was carrying a plastic bag of snacks. In fact, I didn’t see a single soul wearing moccasins or buckskin. Are they all appropriating European culture and should we demand that they stop? They are more than happy to sell you their jewelry, artwork, and so forth, including the bread baked in the appropriated ovens. They don’t seem to mind it at all if we wear the jewelry or display their artwork in our homes.

The thing is, as someone else said, people have been borrowing from one another from time immemorial. I don’t think most people care one way or another. As with most of the current nonsense, it’s really only a small group of the professional malcontents that are raising all the ruckus.

I think it’s outrageous that a woman who apparently devoted her life to authentic Mexican cuisine is being criticized. I suppose they’ll go after Julia Child next, since she wasn’t French. I’m getting very very tired of the ridiculousness.

***What were they putting in those tacos before then? ***

Bernal Diaz del Castillo said they found the Emperor Montezuma chowing down on human sacrifice in his tacos.

Castillo worried the Spanish may have been fed the same but was not sure.

They also brought a novel concept called the “wheel”. Something that was never conceived of by the indigenous populace. Therefore anyone not of European heritage must immediately STOP using anything wheeled.
No low riders for you Pedro!

Don’t tell the Mexicans their beer is a rip off of German beers, or their Nortena bands ripped of the Germans too.
