Re: The war on fat has made people who eat veggies and low fat chicken breasts perpetually hungry.

I agree.

Also, reduced salt and sugar take the enjoyment and satiety out of many foods I used to love.

Being your own cook is the only solution to feeling well fed these days - a skill, unfortunately, I have never learned.

I went through a period where I went low carb to lose weight. No sugar or carbs for 6 months.

At the end of that time I visited the Coke Museum in Atlanta. At the end of the tour they have room where you can sample drinks the make all over the world. I figured I could try a few.

OMG! Beverages I had been drinking all my life (like Coke) were so sweet they were undrinkable. It was like trying to drink maple syrup.

Your sugar taste buds really do get desensitized to sweet tastes.

When I finally got off the diet and started eating fruit I was amazed how sweet it was. Items I had covered in sugar before (like strawberries and blueberries) were plenty sweet enough now without added sugar.

I eventually got back to a “normal” diet (and gained the weight back). I’m not sure a low-carb/low-sugar is practical in the modern world, but it’s clear to me that the high-carb/high-sugar diet that is normal for everyone has warped how we eat.
