You are completely correct about the real reason for the committee.
Constitutionally any committee must have a legislative purpose. So the purpose that the Dems claim is that making sure something like January 6 never happens again. It is a big lie just like everything else. Unfortunately lying by Congress in the Capitol is protected by the Constitution.
