Welcome to The Bicycle Thread. A monthly PING List for bicycle enthusiasts to share experiences, information and ideas.
Priest River.
Anybody watch the Giro d’Italia? Great ending! Looking forward to Le Tour.
Yeah, I know they’re still all doped, but it’s still more entertaining than golf or NASCAR.
I never understood the worry about doping. I’m ready for the cyborg Olympics, or watching trans-women dominating. Just win, baby!
The weather is just getting hotter and your blood pressure is just getting higher.
Today, 3 June, marks World Bicycle Day, which is a celebration of the humble bike. A simple, affordable, environmentally friendly and sustainable mode of transport that has been in use for over 200 years. The day brings together riders from all walks of life and cycling disciplines. The day also celebrates the tremendous health benefits for all age groups. Cycling supports healthier lifestyles, increased fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and reduced stress. With that in mind, it’s no surprise over 40% of Australians ride a bike every year! (Source: National Walking and Cycling Participation Survey 2021).
In September, Australia will be the focus of the cycling world. The 2022 UCI Road World Championships – one of the Triple Crown of Cycling events – is heading to Wollongong. This event is watched by over 300 million viewers worldwide.
It rained every day Friday -> Monday over Memorial Day weekend. The highest temperature hit +47F. Lows around +34F and lots of wind.
The work week is back and we managed a +68F and +77F Thursday and Friday with no rain. Saturday looks promising with sun and 70F high. Back to t-storms Sunday/Monday. Next week we will break 80F Fri->Sun.
The silver lining with lower temps is the grass grows more slowly. We can cut front/back in 1/2 of a 120 gallon trash can. In optimal weather, we fill 3 x 120 gallon trash cans a week with grass clippings.
It’s not a bicycle, but I bought a 3 wheel Schwinn one-speed with a basket now that the price came back down (and I could find one.) It’s fun for an oldster like me at 53 to take it from home to office to grocery store to plant nursery, etc. I live in a spot where they are relatively close together, and it’s flat-ish. It’s a little different from riding a bicycle—you have to steer the front wheel to turn instead of lean.
Now, I don’t want to be negative, but I want to implore people on bikes to obey stop signs, esp. if in a tourist area where drivers of cars are not paying attention. I almost hit a biker using the bike path where he had a stop sign because he failed to stop before crossing the street I was driving a car on. His coming from my left was obscured by a large business sign near the corner next to the bike path. He should have obeyed his stop sign!! If I had hit him, oh, boy we’d be off to the races. He’d be liable for his own injuries since he failed to obey the sign.
Oh, and please move over instead of riding 2-3 abreast on a rural road so that vehicles can pass instead of riding behind you. We live in a day and age of road rage, and it ticks people off when cyclists aren’t obeying the rules of the road. Protect yourselves.
The pulley-wheels in the derailleur (or “jockey wheels”) can have their bearings wear over time, and then get too wobbly. This allows the chain to stay on a track it shouldn’t (too much play in the bearings). Change them out - cheap, quick, easy. Also check the cassette itself and see if the cogs are worn. If the “teeth” are excessively rounded over, you’ll have all kinds of shifting problems, up and down. But apart from the jockey wheel bearings, the teeth themselves can be worn, and after 10 years (you say) then that would be expected with at least moderate use. You could also check the spacing all around btwn sprockets, and the chain for any stiff links or warp.
What’s everyone’s pick for a hitch mounted bike rack?
Viola could be a new Marvel Hero with bicycle powers. 🦸🏼♀️🚴♀️
First Look! Garmin Edge 1040 Solar | The End Of Dying Batteries?Last week I bought a GARMIN VIVOSMART 3 on sale from 80 euros down to 20 euros because the shop is going out of business.
But its an old fitness tracker as Garmin is now making the VIVOSMART 5, for 150 euros.
KUAT is the best rack I’ve found. Mine has a built in lock also.
Thanks, I was looking at those, they seem highly rated by users.
