Domino’s Isn’t Pizza. It’s Something Else Entirely.

Is Domino’s pizza? If you furrow your brow in confusion at this inquiry, tilting your head and replying with some variation on “of course it is,” I have news for you.

To clarify, I’m not a New Yorker, Chicagoan, or Detroiter required to uphold the strict pizza laws of my home city. I grew up in northern New Jersey, where the prevalence of Italian families and our proximity to the Big Apple meant you could find a slice any given moment at any of the two dozen joints in a 10-mile radius.

So, if I’m no purist, why am I questioning Domino’s like this? What I want to clarify is that while Domino’s is always technically pizza, it is not always functionally pizza. In case your furrowed brow has deepened and your head has tilted another 10 degrees, let me explain.

Costco cheese is really good if you like lots of cheese and a chewy crust. I like it. Their take and bake pizza has a different crust and pretty much sucks.

The #1 pizza is burnt, no sauce, and has a myriad of unidentifiable toppings...? I think mushrooms, whole garlic, minced garlic, clumps of herbs (basil? oregano?), and other stuff I hove no idea what it is?

Domino’s came out with an ad admitting how bad their pizza was many years ago and that they put a lot of effort into improving quality. It’s actually a pretty decent pizza if you eat it while it’s still hot.

Dominoes was really bad years ago. Then they upgraded their ingredients and it became edible. Haven’t had one in years so not sure if they kept that standard up.

“The best” pizza is usually a matter of personal taste, and usually boils down to the pizza you grew up eating. Mine was Pizza King in Whitaker, Pa. (later moved to Munhall) - square crust and slices, sauce had yummy lumps of tomato, and provolone instead of mozzarella. Probably no longer in business - I’d give a lot for a slice now.

I’m old enough to remember when Dominos was the lower priced Pizza, it was not considered to be nearly as good as Pizza Hut.

While I never was lucky enough to eat a NY slice, we always liked Shakeys pizza, a chain pizzaria that was pretty good. That was the lament back then - “I wish Shakey’s had delivery!!”

Pizza isn’t rocket science, I think a big part of the decline is cheaping out on ingredients. The markup has always been high. I can still make a HUGE pizza at home for probably 5 bucks.

Letting the dough age for a day or two makes a big difference in flavor, the crust itself is really important overall to a pizza, in my opinion. 50 percent? I think Shakey’s aged their dough, used lots of garlic and parmesan. And it smelled awesome when walking in to their restaurants. Great place for people to work, too.

Yep. Pizza Hut used to be better. Now Dominos is superior. Okay Dominos is not all that but you can say the same about McDonalds. It's consistent. So you know what you're getting. All other pizza chains taste like cardboard now. Papa John's used to be pretty good but it sucks now.

I grew up in Hudson County, NJ and believe me I know what real pizza is.

Domino's is not pizza.

Domino's is an abomination.

Get out! I have cooked them on a flagstone as well! What a Trip! Crispy and yum! We use assiago and provolone with wild hog sausage and pepperoni. Good stuff.

Nothing wrong with Domino’s. A pizza recipe is rather simple. I could make one homemade but why would I want to?

I assume you know about this?

This is sort of fun because it’s a snapshot back to about 16 years ago, when it was state of the art. Plus there’s useful info in there.

I lived in Ann Arbor just after Monaghan started Domino’s there. You could pick up the phone, call them, and have a pizza at your door in 15 minutes. It revolutionized beer parties.

“sammich”, pal, was not used - in those days Italians prided themselves of speaking English, not gibberish.

Best pizza I ever had was at a new years party at a bar. Was all you can eat and drink for $25. From Papa Johns in the next strip. Was wondering why it was so good but then I noticed that the Papa Johns employees who were on their day off were there too. This pissed me off. So they can make a great pizza, they just don’t.
