I know how bad the education system is but that’s somewhat shocking. I don’t have to explain this to anyone here, but dropping the word “deterrent” from reporting is the difference between the opposing images of Russia adopting a defensive/responsive measure and Russia being the nuclear aggressor.

DH has interesting views on Ukraine. I will summarize them here.
Growing up in post war Poland, with a father who had been enslaved by Germans, a grandfather who had been a medic in the Polish army and made and repaired guns for the partisans, he heard many stories.
Germains hired Ukrainians to help run the concentration camps as they had a reputation for being harda**ses.
A Ukrainian group called (can’t remember acronym...UPA??) that sided with Nazis infiltrated into Poland during the war and had underground hideouts etc, helped the Germans during the war, and some kept going after the war.
When DH was a teenager and young man, he traveled to other Eastern bloc countries for visits. Ukrainians had a reputation for being toughs, especially compared to Polaks, Hungarians and others. Some other things too.
But general reputations or even national characteristics certainly doesn’t mean everyone is like that, but the country did have some reputation even then.
As to the current situation, he really has no more insight than anyone else for instance on these threads, but I tell or read him what is posted here, and it all makes total sense to him.
He is also somewhat familiar with Russian character, and speaks Russian, as he had to learn in school. Russians can be brutal, but as far as post-USSR Russia compared to Ukraine, he would prefer the former over the latter. He has listened to Putin giving talks in Russian, and has said he has a strong sense of humor, and is very well spoken, expresses himself clearly. He always prefers to hear the original Russian rather than a translator.

I find it hard to believe that Russian units are surrendering in mass.
